Sites For Sore Eyes

There are far too many good web sites to begin to catalog, but here are some that you might find entertaining, informative, and maybe even thought-provoking. A new set will be added each week while school is in session. Each link will spawn a new browser window. Enjoy!

Week of 10 September 2001: The JFK Assassination. I have been interested in the JFK assassination for 13 years. I have over 45 books at home on the subject, and have spent many hours in Dealey Plaza in Dallas pondering what happened that fateful day in 1963. I have also written a lengthy piece on the issue for Skeptic Magazine, and have been invited to serve as a panelist this year at the "November in Dallas" annual conference. Here are a few of the many web sites dealing with this subject:

  • The Sixth Floor Museum. Regardless of whose story you buy on "whodunit," the Sixth Floor Museum is very nicely done. It occupies the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository building, where
  • Assassination Science. This is the companion web site for the book by Dr. James Fetzer of University of Minnesota-Duluth. I had dinner with Jim last November in Dallas, and he is passionate about his views on the assassination. It's one of the better JFK books I own; the follow-up book is equally good.
  • JFK Lancer. This is the organization that hosts the annual conference in Dallas. Their site is full of valuable resources on the subject.
  • JFK Research. This is primarily a bulletin board for public discussion on the assassination. You must register (free of charge) in order to use the site, but it is worth taking the time to do so. An impressive digital photo archive is also available to all registered users.

Week of 03 September 2001: One of my favorite subjects is Urban Legends. You know, those nasty stories that won't go away, sound like there might be a shred of truth to them, and all your friends believe. Of course, you would never believe one of them, would you? Well, you'd better go check out these sites to make sure the latest story you swallowed isn't the biggest whopper of the year!

Week of 27 August 2001: I dedicate this week's sites to my good friend Chris Kostman. Chris embodies the spirit of ultramarathons. He puts on a variety of ultra cycling and running events throughout California, and has been involved in more races (of all kinds) than you can imagine. Check out his various sites:

  • AdventureCorps.com--This is Chris' main site, and tells a lot about him, his lifestyle, and the "ultra" way of life. Chris is wise beyond his years, and has done more at his ripe young age than many folks could do in several lifetimes. He's now finishing a Ph.D. at UC Berkeley.
  • The508.com--The infamous 508--the toughest one-day bicycle race in the US...508 miles of torture in the Mojave Desert. It took me three tries to even finish this one, but I finally did so in 1995 in 30hrs 7 minutes.
  • PlanetUltra.com--This is Chris' newest venture, a whole series of bicycling events throughout the beautiful state of California.
  • BadwaterUltra.com--If cycling is not your strong suit, but long-distance running is, then you gotta go to Badwater. This 135-mile ultra from the pits of hell itself (Badwater, in Death Valley National Park), all the way to The Portals on Mt. Whitney, is the bad boy of ultra running. Oh yeah--it's always held during the hottest time of the year.

Week of 13 August 2001: I am a weather junkie. While most people like to talk about the weather (especially whe it's bad), I love to research the weather. Here are some national and local links that I find particularly useful.

  • Weather.com--my favorite weather site, with more data than you'll ever be able to use
  • KVII.com--Channel 7's radar is the best when it comes to tracking severe weather.
  • The National Weater Service's Amarillo Office---with lots of historical weather data to look at, as well as the latest official forecast
  • The Climate Prediction Center---with forecasts as near as 6-10 days out, as well as 13 months down the road, it's fun to see what the predictions are, and then compare to what really happens.

Week of 06 August 2001: Hitting the Road. I love to travel, and I am a map geek. I have found these sites to provide all the motivation I need to hop in the van and go.

Week of 30 July 2001: Dietary Issues that give you some food for thought

Week of 23 July 2001:

  • HTMLGoodies.com Great tips and tricks for all levels of users
  • WackyUses.com I'll bet you never thought of these crazy things.
  • ThinkGeek.com With a slogan like "Stuff For Smart Masses," you know it's gotta be off the chain.

Week of 16 July 2001:

  • MissouriTrailerTrash.com A humorous look at the mobile home lifestyle, by someone who actually lives in one.
  • ThisOlTrailer.com Although it sounds tongue-in-cheek, this site is dedicated to the restoration of classic trailers.
  • ABCNews.com/Sections/Cud A quirky, offbeat feature area that always promises "something to chew on."
