Bob had a seasoned crew of 11 with him, with a chase van, small pickup, and motorhome. Nine of his 11 crewmembers had accompanied him on previous transcontinental cycling exploits, and they took excellent care of their rider. Bob paused a few minutes at the truck stop on the west side of Tucumcari. His goal of 9d 11h within reach, Bob exhibited the skills needed to make the mark, yet was very relaxed at the same time.
